Minister Nalova Lyonga Launches Distance Learning Pilot Centre in Limbe.

The Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga, officially launched a pilot distance learning centre in Limbe to serve Government Technical High School (GTHS) Bimbia and Government High School (GHS) Mbonjo, both located in the Fako Division, South West Region.

The inauguration took place on Friday, October 11, at the shared school complex, and featured a live demonstration showcasing how students can benefit from remote learning technologies. The initiative, supported and equipped by IHS Cameroon S.A., marks a significant step toward integrating digital learning into secondary education in Cameroon.

The newly inaugurated ICT Centre includes:

  • 30 desktop computers (accommodating up to 60 students per session),
  • Comfortable seating,
  • High-speed internet access,
  • A projector, and
  • A solar backup system to ensure consistent operation during power outages.

During the ceremony, Minister Nalova Lyonga highlighted the government’s vision to bridge the educational gap across regions by making quality teaching accessible nationwide, regardless of location. She emphasized the importance of discipline, dedication, and self-confidence among students, encouraging them to seize the opportunity offered through this innovation.

“Students should believe in themselves, stay focused, respect school authorities, and work hard to succeed in their studies,” she said.

The minister further explained that the purpose of distance learning is to modernize secondary education by enhancing digital literacy and connectivity in schools across the country. She noted that the government plans to renovate IT centres in various schools as part of the nationwide rollout of the distance education initiative.

After observing a sample lesson delivered live from Yaoundé, Minister Nalova praised the effectiveness of the system, which enables real-time interaction between teachers and students.

“The demonstration showed that knowledge can be transmitted instantly from Yaoundé, with students actively engaging and teachers providing immediate feedback. It’s like having a magical board,” she remarked.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Secondary Education to ensure that every school—urban or rural—is equipped with modern digital tools, allowing all students equal access to quality education and instruction from the country’s best teachers.

This innovative step reflects Cameroon’s dedication to embracing technology in education and ensuring that no learner is left behind.
